Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)

This brings us to the uniqueness of the double major undergraduate program in the School of engineering. This program intends to equip graduates with skills needed to provide human services in a sustainable way, balancing society’s need for long-term infrastructure with environmental health.

Civil engineers are problem solvers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and global leaders. At the Department, we invent the technologies of the future and create solutions to challenges.

If you’ve thought about how we control pollution in the air and water or how we clean up contaminated waste sites or how we assess exposure and human risk, you’re already thinking like an environmental engineer. From clean drinking water and air quality monitoring to pollution controls and sustainable development, environmental engineers are designing new ways to make life better for people around the globe while respecting our world’s natural resources.

Environmental engineers use core engineering skills and a deep understanding of the physical, chemical and biological principles of the local, regional and global environment to help change the world.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Program seeks to prepare students to be successful professionals recognized for their:

  • Critical thinking and problem solving based on a fundamental knowledge of humanities, social sciences, mathematics, science, engineering science and a broad range of civil and Environmental engineering technical areas;
  • Consideration of global and societal concerns, ethics, and sustainability when making engineering decisions;
  • Leadership and effective communication;
  • Civic engagement and contributions to society and Pursuit of lifelong learning and professional development.
    • Graduates will pursue a diverse range of careers that build on their engineering education. During the initial years of their careers, graduates will:

      • Apply technical proficiency in the principles and methods essential to modern civil engineering practice.
      • Demonstrate understanding of global, societal, environmental, and sustainability issues related to civil engineering.
      • Exhibit effective communication, teamwork, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills.
      • Engage in ethical and responsible practice while pursuing professional growth.
    • Graduates of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program will have:

      • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering;

      • An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
      • An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
      • An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams;
      • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems;
      • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
      • An ability to communicate effectively;
      • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
      • A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
      • A knowledge of contemporary issues;
      • An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

The four-year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering enables the graduate to enter professional practice as an engineer or to continue his or her studies in programs leading to advanced degrees in the following broad fields of specialization: construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, environmental hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, hydrology, materials, structural engineering and mechanics, transportation, Occupational health safety and environment (OHSE) and water resources planning and management. This can in turn increase their chances of working with road companies, environmental and waste management companies etc.
