General University Courses

Welcome to GUC

Welcome to the General University Courses unit (GUC). Our Mission is to equip students with quality language education through an approach that is communicative and collaborative, inductive and interactive. Our main focus is on real life language use so as to enable students to use languages effectively in academic, social and professional environments.

Our Motto
LANGUAGE, THE VISA TO MANY CULTURES

WORD FROM THE DEAN

You are highly welcomed to the General University Courses Unit (GUC) that paves the way between languages and cultures. The unit was created in 2020 and it offers an exceptional academic curriculum that enables our students to acquire unique knowledge, develop outstanding language and literacy skills and gain valuable experience. The unit is made up of qualified faculty members from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Through effective teaching methods, faculty members help develop students’ comprehension and the mobilization of knowledge that is savoirs translated into the applied practice of savoir-faire. In our unit, students will learn more grammatical rules in French and English, how to talk about their friends and family, their course, their living situation, and their leisure and academic activities. By the end of the Freshman year, students will therefore be able to communicate or interact freely, listen and write in a communicative situation. To render the use of language classes effective, a syllabus with communicative component and a socio-cultural component has been drawn.

One of the most important objectives of our unit is not just based on language acquisition during the Freshman year in the University but also to accompany and orientate students who will like to write foreign language exams, HND, to acquire public speaking skills and also those who wish to acquire skills and talents in various fields. One of the most significant strengths of our unit is the small class sizes which enables lecturers to have a one on one contact with students. Study languages with us and we will help you unveil your linguistic potential and prepare you for the entrepreneurial world of languages.

Top 5 frequently asked questions about languages and proposed responses

  • Where did language come from?
According to Edward Vaida, historical linguist at Western Washington University, there are several sets of theories about the origin of language. We have the Divine Intervention Theory, the natural theories about how man began imitating sounds (onomatopoeia) and movements from its natural environment. A final theory separates instincts and approaches to the fact that man did not live in solidarity that is he needed to communicate to others in order to survive so he began naming things vaguely.
  • What is the oldest language?
It is important to recognize that language is not just verbal communication, actually the first language was not composed with words. It can be said that languages are symbols for representing other things, thus the oldest symbols are paintings or sculptures of objects found in the natural world.
  • How many languages exits?
According to the Linguistic Society of America there 6.909 distinct languages in the world.
  • Which is the most spoken language in the world?
At the top of our list (taken from Babbel.com) figures Chinese with 1.2 billion native speakers, it’s followed by Spanish with more than 400 million native speakers and at third place, we have English that has about 360 million speakers.
  • Can people ‘switch’ between personalities while speaking another language?
There is a Czech proverb that says ‘Learn a new language and get a new soul”. And even though this is in current development and far from over, some studies suggest that there is a connection between speaking another language and decision making.
