Report on the School of Health Sciences ConferenceCUIB Trade Fair 2026 | February 4th

The conference commenced with an invocation by Fr. Rash, establishing a reflective tone for the proceedings. This was followed by a substantive presentation from the Students’ Union Government (STUGA) President, Ms. Peter Precious. Her address, themed “The Hidden Crisis of Healthcare Waste in Cameroon,” critically examined the environmental and public health ramifications of medical waste. She proceeded to outline actionable mitigation strategies for aspiring healthcare professionals to reduce pollution within clinical settings.

Subsequently, the Dean of the School of Health Sciences formally introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Shifu Ismail, a Medical Doctor from the Buea Town Integrated Health Centre. Dr. Ismail’s scholarly discourse centered on the multifactorial issue of climate change. He systematically addressed its primary anthropogenic causes, direct and indirect consequences on population health, and necessary pathways for adaptation and mitigation.

His analysis was notably grounded in local context, utilizing the 2022 Buea mountain floods as a case study illustrating tangible climate impacts. The presentation further explored concomitant challenges, including public fear and the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation surrounding climate science.

The session successfully framed environmental stewardship as a critical, interdisciplinary component of modern healthcare education.
